| Larry Foley |
|
|
After almost twenty years of writing, recording, producing music and fronting such bands as The Punters and The 8 Track Favourites
Larry Foley has emerged to put his stamp on a body of work which is quickly establishing him as a solo performer.
His new, self -produced recording is a reflection of his roots, his love of a good song and his long-standing, creative relationship with such musicians as Sandy Morris (WGB) and Chris Ledrew (Bros. in Stereo). It also showcases his unique sound with fiddler Patrick Moran, with whom Larry has performed and recorded with almost exclusively, for over 15 years.
Influences heard on this recording range from Merle Haggard, Gram Parsons, Townes VanZandt and Buck Owens to the folkier and closer-to home-sounds of Ron Hynes, Chris Hennessy and Gordon Lightfoot.
Larry’s songwriting is featured on six of the songs on the CD. “Buck Owen’s Song” is a salute to the legend and incorporates the Telecaster sound that was a trademark of a Buck Owen’s Song. "Natural Beauty" is a reflection of sunny California and Larry's many trips to the Golden State. "Clearer the Bottle" is a tale of sin and redemption, inspired by Johnny Cash and Jack Daniels. "Memphis" is an ode to the music and the legends of Sun Records and the days of Sam Philips.
While, "Old Smile" walks through the universal theme of the passage of time and "Singing on the Wind" is a quintessential ballad of love and loss, written in the celtic tradition, but with a western sound.
The first single “If I Needed You”from the CD is already being played by the VOCM network and KIXX Radio and getting good response from listeners.
The CD also features other great songs such as “If Teardrops Were Pennies”, “I Don’t Care”, “Walking On The Moon” and “That’s All It Took”.
Selections on the CD include: Walkin On The Moon, That’s All It Took, Singing On The Wind, Old Smile, Natural Beauty, Memphis, If Teardrops Were Pennies, If I Needed You, I Don’t Care, Clearer The Bottle, Buck Owen’s Song

“Christmas - May Your Days Be Merry And Bright” is the title of the new CD and the first solo venture by John Curran without The Masterless Men. For a long time John has wanted to record a solo project and more specifically a Christmas CD and that time has finally come. Christmas is about family and being with the ones you love and the feeling of warmth and belonging. John is especially proud that his daughter Alicia performed with him on this CD.

|
The seventh CD by Shanneyganock titled “Volume VII”, is by far the strongest and best work that the band has done to date. The powerful vocals of Chris Andrews punctuates the recording, while the voice and accordian of Mark Hiscock gives the record the distinct Newfoundland sound.
Shanneyganock is able to find some diamonds in the rough each time they embark on a new recording project and this time is no exception. The uptempo song ”Don’t Wanna Dance” sets the tone for the CD. Covers of songs from Richard Thompson, Ewan MacColl, Bruce Cockburn, Woody Guthrie & Billy Bragg and Steve Earle are delivered in the Shanneyganock style. As well Shanneyganock put their own unique arrangements to traditional songs, “Virgie O”, “Skellera Hat”. “Capelin On A Sunday” written by a local artist Brian Walsh is given its first recording.
Chris Andrews showcases his writing skills again and has collaborated with Brian Warfield to produce another gem “Newfoundland Must Band” which in these uncertain times in Newfoundland says a lot about what is going on . Mark Hiscock also penned a new song for this CD “Saltfish Trader” which tells of times past and the history of Fishing in days of yore.
